Work Wear Tips: Stay Cool and Look Cute for Summer

This is a guest post. Jane Williams is a freelance writer raised in Philadelphia and now based in Atlanta that is constantly looking for new ways to stay stylish in the Southern summer heat.

Sometimes it's hard to strike a balance between comfortable and professional when it comes to your attire, especially in warmer climates. And now that summer is upon us, the last thing you want is to feel hot and sticky as you sweat it out in your pantsuit. Fortunately though, I've got the info on how you can mix things up with a few of my favorite tips!

Many offices do have dress codes, so it's always a good idea to be familiar with those before making any drastic changes. However, layering that jacket or blazer over something cooler, like a silk tank or tee is an option that most professionals can handle. In other words, use the suggestions below based on your workplace's criteria, though I think you'll find that many, if not all, will fare well across the board(room).

Fancy Pants

If you're bored with the same tailored trousers that you wear day in and day out, try experimenting with different lengths and varied styles for summer. The weather is just right for cropped bottoms, like ankle grazing cigarette pants or the loose and billowy silhouette of culottes. Another great choice is the universally flattering bell bottom pant. They'll add a great retro vibe to your outfit.

Pattern Play

Lyst’s team of stylists understand the power of patterns, and incorporating them is a great way to mix up your work wardrobe this summer. Choose patterned pants or a patterned skirt and pair either with a quality black or white short sleeve tee. Finish off this outfit, making it appropriate for both the office and happy hour, by wearing a statement necklace, bib style is a great choice, and pairing with heels.

Sassy Shoes

Your shoes can completely transform your workday wardrobe, so for summer we recommend having a little fun in this category. Writers over at The Muse are loving pops of color for summer, so if you want to jazz up plain black, white, or khaki bottoms and a crisp white button down, couple an outfit like this with a pair of bold pumps. Closed toe heels or flats will be most effective, and we suggest choosing colors like yellow, blue, and deep pink, like fuchsia.

T-Shirt Time

T-shirts are an excellent staple for professionals, but I'm not talking about the kind that come in the little plastic wrapped packages of three. The type of tee that you need will be high quality, fitted, and thick. Once it meets this criteria buy a few, and if they come in other neutral colors, like black or gray, grab some of those, too. These are great for layering under blazers or vests, tucking into skirts and trousers, and look fabulous with statement jewelry.

Statement Skirts

Glamour magazine’s editors agree that a closet isn't complete without a statement skirt that can be worn to work, but if you'd rather have two or three, that's even better! Perfect for work, the statement skirt will pair well with tanks, tees, and button downs. Choose something striped or scalloped, high-waisted, wrap style, or maxi length. These variations will help keep you cool, yet polished and professional.

I hope you've enjoyed this foray into mixing up your workday wardrobe while staying cool all summer long. Looking professional is important, but so is feeling comfortable in what you're wearing, and therefore your own skin. Luckily, incorporating a few of the above tips will have you showing up at the office looking stylish and sharp.
